Finding a plumber you can trust is harder than it should be.
Whether you have a leaking pipe, a broken boiler, a dripping tap, or you’re planning a bathroom renovation, the last thing you want is to hand over your money, have someone come through your front door, and then spend the next several months trying to get them to come back and fix what they’ve done wrong.
We’re CCW Plumbing & Heating, based in Bromsgrove and covering Redditch, Worcester, Droitwich, Studley, and the surrounding areas. We regularly receive calls from customers who have already used another plumber before finding us. Sometimes the work hasn’t been done properly. Sometimes the problem hasn’t even been diagnosed correctly. And other times, the plumber has simply stopped answering their phone.
This guide is based on genuine experience. Not a textbook. Not a marketing brochure. Just honest advice about what to look for before you let anyone into your home.
Start With a Recommendation, But Don’t Stop There
Asking people you know and trust for a recommendation is always a good starting point. If a friend, family member, or neighbour has used a plumber and had a genuinely positive experience, that’s valuable information.
But don’t rely solely on local Facebook groups.
The local Facebook groups are busy at the moment. Within minutes of posting you can have twenty or thirty suggestions, and that number just keeps climbing. It becomes overwhelming very quickly, and the reality is that some of those recommendations may not be genuine. People recommend friends, family members, or businesses that are struggling for work.
A recommendation is the start of your research. Not the end of it. If you do get a name from a Facebook group, take your time and check them out properly before you pick up the phone.
Check Their Online Presence Properly
Once you have a name, spend a few minutes doing some research.
- Do they have a professional website?
- Do they have a Facebook page that is regularly updated with photos of real work?
- Do they have genuine Google reviews and a substantial number of them?
- How long have they been operating?
One important point: don’t rely on testimonials displayed on a company’s own website. Anyone can type a review onto their own website and make it say anything. Go to Google Reviews instead, where reviews are independently verified.
Don’t just look at the star rating. Read what people are actually saying. Are they mentioning communication? Did the company solve a difficult problem? Did they turn up when they said they would? Did they come back when something needed attention? Those details tell you far more than a five-star rating on its own.
We had over 150 reviews on Checkatrade, built up over years of work. When their prices increased significantly and we were no longer getting any business through them, we came off the platform and lost all of those reviews in the process. We’re currently at 86 Google reviews and climbing.

Whether They Answer the Phone Tells You a Lot
This sounds almost too obvious to say, but one of the biggest complaints we hear from new customers is that nobody gets back to them.
Recently, someone told us they had contacted twelve different plumbers before we answered. Twelve. They’d sent messages, left voicemails, filled in contact forms, and heard nothing back.
We have a dedicated office manager who handles all calls, emails, and WhatsApp messages. If she’s already on a call when you ring, you’ll get a call straight back. We save customer numbers and customers regularly comment that they’re surprised when the phone is answered with their name, even from a single previous enquiry. It’s just good business, and it’s what people deserve.
If someone doesn’t return your call before they’ve taken your money, what are the chances of them being easy to contact when something goes wrong afterwards?
Check That They Have the Right Qualifications
Not all plumbing work requires the same qualifications, but certain types of work have legal requirements attached to them.
- Gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. You can verify this on the Gas Safe Register website.
- Unvented hot water cylinder work requires a G3 qualification.
- Heat pump installations require specialist training and appropriate accreditation.
- Some work requires formal certification and notification to Building Control.
At CCW we are Gas Safe registered, G3 qualified, Level 3 heat pump installers, NICEIC registered (meaning we can self-certify work for Building Control on heat pumps, cylinders, and boilers), hold CSCS cards, and carry £5 million public liability insurance. We can work on gas, oil, and LPG systems.
As Worcester Bosch Accredited Installers we can offer extended manufacturer guarantees of up to 12 years – longer than most other installers can provide.
If you ever need a certificate when selling your home and the work was done by us, you will have received it at the time of installation. We have spoken to too many homeowners who discovered a boiler or cylinder was never signed off when they were mid-sale and in a panic. Don’t let that be you.
Be Very Careful About Choosing Purely on Price
This is the one that catches people out most often.
We don’t discount our prices. Everyone who contacts us gets the same price for the same job, whether they live in a small flat or a large detached house. We won’t add money on because someone looks wealthy, and we won’t increase a price because we know a customer desperately needs the work done. We’ve heard of companies that deliberately avoid giving upfront prices as a strategy, knowing that once the work is started and the walls are open, the customer has very little choice but to pay whatever is asked. We think that’s wrong.
If you are looking purely for the cheapest option, we probably aren’t the right fit. There will always be someone willing to do it cheaper. There are also people carrying out plumbing work who may not have the qualifications, insurance, or experience of an established business. The cheapest option very often becomes the most expensive one once repairs, repeat visits, water damage, or replacement installations are factored in.

Real Stories: When Getting It Wrong Gets Expensive
The engineer removed from the Gas Safe Register
One customer had a boiler installation carried out by an engineer who was later removed from the Gas Safe Register. She was left with a boiler that Gas Safe advised her not to use and which could not be serviced, invalidating her warranty.
She spent months trying to find a company willing to help. Several didn’t return her calls. Others didn’t want to get involved with rectifying someone else’s work.
We went out, sorted the installation properly, and got her warranty reinstated with the manufacturer. She is now a regular customer. But the stress she went through was completely avoidable.
In her words: “It wasn’t an easy job as was fixing someone else’s bodge job, leaving us with a boiler which Gas Safe advised us not to use and was not serviceable. We had contacted other boiler installers who didn’t come back to us so were so thankful to find someone who returned our calls and were able to complete a complex job and ultimately make our boiler safe again.”
The developer who switched contractors mid-build
We recently took over the plumbing for a residential and commercial developer who has been in business for fifty years. Their previous plumbing contractor had been doing poor quality work, missing appointments, falling behind schedule, and making excuses without resolution. We came in, completed the first and second fix, and have since had to return to earlier developments where problems are now surfacing.
One property had a persistent shower leak. The shower had already been replaced twice before we were involved. After investigation, both the manufacturer and ourselves confirmed the issue was not a product fault. It was an installation error. Replacing a product doesn’t fix an installation problem. Getting the installation right the first time does.
Ask How They Handle Pricing Before They Start
Before booking any work, ask:
- Is the quote or initial visit free of charge?
- Is the work a fixed price or an hourly rate?
- What happens if additional work is needed?
- Will I be told the cost before any extra work is carried out?
We give fixed prices wherever possible. For leak detection, where we genuinely don’t know what’s involved until we locate the source, we tell you our hourly rate and give a realistic time estimate. The moment we understand what’s needed, we tell you the cost before we proceed. No surprises.
Understand That Some Jobs Take Longer Than You Expect
We occasionally hear ‘it won’t take you long’ before we’ve even seen the job. Plumbing doesn’t always work that way. Leak detection is the best example. We always book a minimum of two hours for a leak job because finding the source can take considerable time before any repair begins. We once had to remove all the floorboards in a bungalow to locate a leak that several other plumbers had previously failed to find. It took four hours. The repair itself was quick. Finding the fault was the hard part.
Tap replacements are another common one. It can be a thirty-minute job. It can also be considerably longer if access is restricted or something unexpected comes up. One of our customers described how a routine tap replacement turned into a much longer day due to an unforeseen problem. His review said: “I was very grateful that I had hired an experienced professional rather than go the DIY route. Rob remained positive and cheerful throughout even though it was going to considerably lengthen his working day.”
Make Sure They Give You a Timeslot and Actually Show Up
One of the most consistent things first-time customers tell us is how surprised they are that we simply showed up when we said we would. That should not be a surprise. But it is, because it hasn’t been their experience elsewhere.
We give a two-hour arrival window and let you know if we are running behind. Our system sends a text when the engineer is on the way. We don’t ask you to clear your whole day. We regularly get calls from people who booked with someone else for speed or price, only for that person to not show up at all.
Always Get an Invoice and Be Wary of Cash-Only Requests
After any work is completed, you should receive a proper invoice showing what was done, the amount charged, and payment details. Be cautious if someone insists on cash only with nothing in writing. There is no record of the work, no guarantee to refer back to, and no paper trail if something goes wrong.
We accept cash because some customers prefer it. But we never ask for it. Every job gets an invoice with our bank details, and every customer has a record of what was carried out.
Being Immediately Available Isn’t Always a Good Sign
If you contact a plumber and they can come tomorrow, that isn’t automatically reassuring. It could mean they genuinely have a gap. It could also mean they don’t have many returning customers, which is worth thinking about.
Good plumbers are often busy. During our busiest periods, customers have waited several weeks because they would rather wait for someone they trust. The customers who come to us purely on price and availability tend to be the ones constantly searching for a new plumber, because they haven’t found one they can genuinely rely on.

A Simple Checklist Before Hiring Any Plumber
If I needed to hire a plumber tomorrow, here is what I would check:
- Ask friends or family for a personal recommendation first
- Check their Google Reviews and read what people are actually saying
- Visit their website and Facebook page and look at examples of real work
- Confirm they have the relevant qualifications for the type of work needed
- Ask whether they are fully insured
- Get a price upfront and confirm whether the initial visit or quote is free
- Make sure they give you a timeslot and a process for running late
- Confirm you will receive a proper invoice after the work is complete
- Pay attention to how quickly and professionally they communicate from the very first contact
- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, keep looking
Final Thoughts
Finding a plumber you can trust is not really about finding someone who can fit a tap or replace a boiler. Most people can do that. It is about finding someone who answers the phone, turns up when they say they will, is honest about what something will cost, does the work properly, and is still there if something needs attention afterwards.
Most homeowners do not want the cheapest plumber. They want peace of mind. And when you find a plumber or heating engineer who consistently delivers that, they are worth holding onto.
